Annual Meeting and Dinner

A very large crowd attended this year's CEMCD annual dinnerboard_members.jpg meeting at the Bruce Township Hall on Thursday, January 26, 2012.  The evening was highlighted by a presentation by retiring Executive Director Dusty King.  Dusty shared her deep appeciation for all of the support she has received over the past 16 years. The District Board members presented Dusty with gifts and a plaque for her dedicated year's of service.  Dusty will officially retire in May.

A number of awards were presented to community members for their stewardship of the land.poster_winner.jpg

Delaney Stec from Pickford received a plaque, a certificate and cash award for her winning poster.  Delanay's poster was selected as the first place poster by the Michigan Association of Conservation Districts at their convention in December.  This is the first time in 16 years, our District has taken a first place ribbon at the state level with a local contestant’s poster. Delaney first won a blue ribbon at the district level.  Then her poster placed first at the state level.

As usual, no one complained about the food or the amount of it.  This annual pot luck dinner was complete with fresh ham, turkey, potatoes, beans of all kinds, salads, rolls and an abundance of desserts.  Special thanks goes out to our Envirothon Team from Sault Ste. Marie High School for providing service during the dinner.

Emerald Ash Borer Program

The Chippewa/East Mackinac Conservation Program has started this year's effort to manage movement of the Emerald Ash Borer in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.  Our summer employees have been hired and are getting trained for another busy season.

Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS)

VHS is a severe disease of freshwater and marine fish recently found in the Great Lakes.  It can be spread by infected fish,  contaminated water sources or contaminated objects.  Ensure the virus does not spread to additional locations by taking these steps:

  • Thoroughly clean and dry your boat or trailer before using again
  • Empty all water from equipment before transporting
  • Remove all mud, plants, and aquatic life from equipment
  • Do not move fish or plants from one body to another

Stop your boat from spreading fish disease.  Be responsible.  Clean it out.  Wash it down.

Sault Ste. Marie Watershed Management Plan

The Sault Ste. Marie Area Watershed Management Plan is a partnership of local citizens and environmental professionals concerned over water quality in the Sault Ste. Marie area.  This resulting watershed management plan is an assessment of current conditions and characteristics of water quality in the creeks and groundwater within the watershed of the City of Sault Ste. Marie.  The assessment also takes into account historical and social perspectives that have helped shape water quality conditions.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provided funding for this project through Section 604(b) of the Clean Water Act.  The plan was completed on October 10, 2007.
